Click Here to Donate The walk continues but due to unforeseen circumstances I have not been able to as many steps completed as I would have hoped.
I have now completed 318,537 steps up to the 12th April. Special thanks to everybody who has donated Kai Barrett, Paul Revers, Nick Wallace, Kevin Johnson, Pat and everybody who contributed at the CB Groundworks charity football match. The money raised currently stands at £1625 and this will help so many people who are looking for help. I must thank the match referee Darren Drysdale and his team at the Cambridge United V Charlton Athletic fixture who kindly walked a few steps with me before the game. Darren Drysdale supported my previous London to Qatar walk and it generated conversations from the supporters at the stadium with them asking all sorts of questions? Why was the REF walking with you? Was there a problem with the pitch, was there a leaking irrigation head just a couple of examples? But when I told the supporters why I was walking with all the match officials there response was amazing, Yes match referees and officials are human and several have been supportive of the mental health awareness we have been promoting. Thanks to Carl Badcock for taking the photos with the match officials. Thanks again to everybody for your support. Ian Darler B.E.M

1.2 million steps equalling 678 miles is the latest walking challenge for Cambridge Utd FC’s Stadium Manager / Head Groundsman Ian Darler, this time in aid of local mental health charity Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire (CPSL) Mind. Having previously walked the equivalent of London to Qatar for the 2022 football World Cup, Ian is now ready for another epic charity mileage count as he aims to walk the distance from London to Berlin, the city hosting the Euro 2024 final. Ian will be setting off this month on his virtual walk and hoping to finish before the July 14th final. ‘I’ll be walking every day to ensure we hit the target of 678 miles with the final part of the walk into the Cledara Abbey stadium, the home of Cambridge United. The driving force behind Ian’s fundraising walk, and wishing to support CPSL Mind, is his own previous battles with mental health challenges and how, through the telling of his story, the ongoing support he offers to others. ‘Having personally had depression and PTSD I appreciate how important it is to get help and support and to be able to talk to people about how you are feeling,’ Ian explained. ‘Since my recovery and publication of my book ‘Life’s A Pitch’ and writing the chapter Life Changing, I have been approached by several people who had been struggling in silence with their own mental health problems and thankfully I have been able to help them in a small way and they are now currently also in a much better place. ‘ ‘I just wish I had told people how I was feeling sooner as things do get better when you talk, and I now talk openly about my mental health, and it is becoming a normal thing to do.’ Ian hopes that companies and individuals will support his walking challenge and also start the discussion about mental health in their workplaces and homes, a hope shared by CPSL Mind’s Fundraising and Communications Manager Gary Sutcliffe. ‘We are so grateful to Ian for embarking on what will be a lot of walking over the coming months and raising funds for our vital work,’ said Gary. ‘Our services have a very real impact on the lives of local people, organisations and groups so please do support Ian if you can. And please do look out for your family and friends and check when they say they are ok, that they are really ok’. Thanks to Cambridge United Lottery & Tesco for partnering Cambridge Charity Fund Raisers with this project. Here is an exciting update from Sponsor a Puppy to brighten your day.
Barney is making great progress with his Puppy Raiser, Jean. He’s beginning to learn the cues ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘down’ and is making fabulous progress with these. Jean has also been working on Barney’s food manners. She can place some kibble on the floor while Barney patiently waits for the ‘okay’ cue before eating it. He really enjoys going on free runs, especially with Jean’s rehomed dog, Thomas. They have so much fun running around together. Great work Jean and Barney! Thank you for sponsoring Barney, for weekly updates on his journey join his exclusive Facebook group! CCFR donated £500 to Daniel & Chaney Bray following the loss of their beautiful daughter Ellie to support Blood cancer UK. We would urge everybody to support teamellie1. Every penny counts. As a family, we were blessed to have our beautiful Ellie for 18 years so we set out to honour her life by raising £18,000. We reached this target within 6 months so have increased our target to £50,000. Any funds raised will go towards research into Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) through Blood Cancer UK. Ellie was diagnosed with AML in October 2020 which carries a less than 20% five year survival rate. Her treatment was incredibly brutal and even if her stem cell transplant had been successful, she would have been left with a lifetime of health problems. Although some types of Leukaemia currently carry survival rates of over 90%, this is not the case for AML and those diagnosed deserve to have hope for a happy and healthy future. The first £16,000 we have raised was directed towards the VICTOR Clinical Trial for AML run by Dr Dillon who Ellie was under at Guy's Hospital. Ellie received this drug but sadly it didn't work for her, our hope is that this research will be able to predict what types of AML it will work for in the future. We are now directing further funds raised towards a research project into AML by Dr Neil Rodrigues at Cardiff University. Dr Rodrigues and his team have identified a key molecule involved in the normal function of blood cells and have found that the levels of this molecule are lower than they should be in people who have AML. They think that by raising the levels of this molecule, they might be able to restore the normal functions of blood cells. Ultimately, this could provide people with AML with a new treatment option and improve the chance of survival for people with the disease. Ellie raised over £20,000 for various charities throughout her treatment. We would like to use this fund to continue her incredible legacy and play our part in helping researchers find kinder and more effective treatments for AML. We hope that our fundraising will contribute towards the day when no one loses a loved one to this awful disease. We know that nothing we can do will bring Ellie back or fix the heartache that we feel every single day but we know that she would want us to help fund research, in the hope that one day there will be a cure for everyone diagnosed with AML. |
