Fishing Buddies Cambridge was launched on the 22nd October 2025. Anglers were asked to come together to Support Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, both anglers and sponsors had already raised and kindly donated £500 to ARHC, a further £300 was raised on the day so altogether a total of £800 was raised for the charity. The day itself was equally as important with so many anglers chatting, laughing, and enjoying the occasion. Special thanks to Fraser Gilbert of Frasers Fishery, Andrew Aspinall of A.R.Aspinall & Sons and Steven Ankin of Herringbone Restoration for supporting the event. Fishing Buddies Cambridge is part of Cambridge Charity Fund Raisers. Fishing Buddies Cambridge has been created to share the benefits of angling with anglers who feel alone through loss of a family member or friend, have health or mobility concerns, stress at work or other challenges, and have possibly lost their confidence to go fishing on their own. Our aim is simple but powerful – to improve mental health, reduce social isolation and create friendships for people who are too often left feeling lonely and in simple terms need company. Fishing buddies will provide the opportunity for people to ‘open up’ and chat about any concerns that they may not have been able to talk about in the past. We hope to continue breaking down barriers to wellbeing, using fishing as a pathway to improved mental health, stronger communities, and lasting change. Fishing with a friend allows you to share the excitement of the catch however big or small along with the more peaceful moments beside the water, and chatting about life’s stories. Fishing is about more than just catching fish. It is about friendships and the bond that forms between fishing friends, many light-hearted stories and life’s challenges have been spoken about whilst sitting on the banks of rivers and lakes Fishing in remote locations can be lonely, fishing friendships adds an extra layer of safety, ensuring that there is always someone to assist in case of an emergency or having someone to help carry the tackle and other things that make the trip safer and reassuring. Being outdoors can also improve mental well-being. Spending time with nature, outlines how exposure to natural environments is linked to improved mood, and a reduction in anxiety. Many of us look forward to outdoor experiences near the water and know fishing can be so beneficial. We are pleased to confirm that Cambridge Fish Preservation Angling Club and Fraser Gilbert of Frasers Fishery have already kindly agreed to support Fishing Buddies Cambridge with the fishing venues. We are hopeful that we will be able to announce further sponsors and partners in the coming weeks. There will not be any cost to anglers attending days out, all they need is a current rod licence, tackle, and bait. Dates are being planned for 2026 so any anglers who would like to attend will just need to register to ensure we arrange enough swims.
Please note that whilst we will always try to provide a safe environment Cambridge Charity Fund Raisers cannot accept any responsibility for any accidents should they occur during the events and anglers are responsible for their own safety. I would like to again thank Kevin Johnson of CB Groundworks & Construction for putting up the challenge again,
I must also thank Frasers Fishery for kindly allowing me to use their lake. None of this would be worth doing without the generosity of so many people making donations to support the event. We hope this money will make a difference to the six charities who will all receive an equal share of the 13.1k Ian Darler B.E.M https://www.cufcfoundation.com/news-and-updates/big-fish-off-a-huge-success |
